Hello my name is Simon or Junes, and I am running for the position of Black Students' Officer. Overall, I intend on ensuring that both Black and Ethnic minority students are not only given the best possible experience at University, but also the opportunity for greater engagement with the University and the SU.

The need for a Black Students Officer is to ensure the fair representation of those groups, along with other ethnic minorities, but also to show the progress we have made as a University between all ethnicities as a whole. Studying Media and Communications at University has allowed me to fully understand the scope, in terms of the stereotypical representation, of Black and Ethnic minority students within the media and society. It is an opportunity to highlight a variety of issues that the University may not be aware of, and affect educational institution as a unit.

Cultural Awareness

A more established platform for engagement when it comes to cultural events. Therefore ensuring that we emphasise the need to introduce all types of people to various cultures and provide people with all new natural experiences. Firstly by reinventing a name for the previous ‘ACS’ or ‘International’ Society, that is inviting to all races, and not allowing there to be a hint of segregation. Additionally having student cultural events to be emphasised and celebrated from Black History Month, Chinese New Year, Eid and even the pioneers of British Culture within all SU facilities.

Issues Created by Hate

Secondly ensure that we don’t promote racial aggression. I don't want to be a candidate that rams Black or Ethnic Students rights into people's faces, as Greenwich has a positive long standing history with a very well populated Black Community, most especially at Avery Hill Campus. Therefore I want to not only build on current progress, but ensure I'm not discriminatory and activist in my approach to dealing with racial issues. I will ensure they are dealt with intelligence and not prejudice, as we all share the same world and all races should work together to empower equality, rather than segregate ourselves and turn diversity into a problem.

From zero tolerance racism to ignorance

There are a small percentage of students who feel as though they have been a victim of racism, predominately through the educational institution, as their cultural identities are not clearly portrayed within various courses such as politics, arts and other courses. However a crackdown is needed in order to ensure that all representations are being explored not only within the SU but also the various educational disciplines, eliminating the idea of segregation in any shape or form, towards any race. If I am elected I will ensure a fairer representation of Black and Ethnic minorities also, I shall tackle issues with a clear mind and without prejudice. Allowing me to use the resources designed for you are used to their utmost potential.
