What is your Students' Union?
The Students' Union has a huge influence on your life at University. It does a wide variety of things to make your time at university better. Things you are most likely to see are Sports teams and Societies or maybe the events that go on in Bar Lat and Sparrows. But there are things you might not be aware of... Like the fact that it was the Students' Union that persuaded the University to have a 24hour Library during hand ins and exams. It runs campaigns like the Inter-campus bus campaign, Mental health awareness and getting the bushes cut back and more lighting/better CCTV on the way to sparrows. Essentially trying its best to deal with you the students' issues.
Who are you Electing?
There are 4 Full-Time roles - President, Vice-President Campaigns and Welfare, Vice-President Education and Vice-President Student Activities.
These are called 'Sabbatical Officers' and it is their job to represent students to the university and get the students voice recognised and listened to. This is a full time job which they have to take a year out of their course to do.
There are 11 Part-Time roles - Women Students' Officer, Black Students' Officer, LGBT+ Students' Officer, Disabled Students' Officer, Mature Students' Officer, International Students' Officer, Post Graduate and Part-Time Students' Officer, Volunteering Officer and Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway each have their own Campus Officer.
They are still studying their course, and volunteer their time to represent the students on the specific issues they may come across.
All These together - Make up the Students' Union Executive Committee. They basically lead the representation side of the union, making important decisions and bringing ideas to Union council and members of staff to improve student life.
There are also NUS Delegates - They go to the annual NUS National Conference and represent your views on the national stage. Voting on important NUS policy and even creating a bit of policy themselves sometimes, if Greenwich students feel strongly enough about it.
Why should you vote?
Because every vote counts! The way the union operates and the directions it takes are decided by the Executive Committee, and you have the opportunity to decide who you want in the driving seat. You may think it wont effect you or its not that important, but if the students' Union was to reach its full potential, It could have an influence on thousands of students every day! What kind of union do you want?
Who are we?
We are SU4U and we want just that. An SU that involves its students in it's decision making processes and works solely for you, the Greenwich Students. We hope this has been helpful, check us out and read our Manifesto's, we think we are heading in the right direction. What do you think?
We're here for you!
