Introduced to the Motion Picture industry in 1994, based at a highly acclaimed orchestral
recording facility, I developed my management and resolution skills, including work on
Academy Award® winning projects.
In 2011 I committed to a new professional path, joining the University of Greenwich as a
mature law student. I subsequently pursued the opportunity for development of others,
bringing my previous skills to the benefit and growth of the Students' Union and to its
members.
“Growth (noun) to increase in range or amount, or to become more advanced or developed”.
Increase
Despite common myths mature students emanate from a diverse range of backgrounds,
often with less traditional qualifications. As Mature Students’ Officer, I would offer a conduit for the creation of opportunities, and the development of individuals, their careers and families. Being a parent of two young children, I understand the pressure of balancing the responsibility of childcare with that of academic commitment. Therefore, I would conduct a review of the childcare arrangements provided by the University, considering practical and affordable options with OFSTED approved providers.
Development
The development of a previous ability or, as in my circumstances, the establishment of a new aptitude, often introduces the mature student to University. This often involves a change in lifestyle with a significant change to financial commitments and personal responsibilities. In the position of Mature Students’ Officer I would seek to ensure that the University takes a holistic approach to the mature student experience, this often being more effective than single interventions, creating a more emphatic understanding in the relationship on the challenges facing individuals.
Advancement
In the advancement of academic development, financial pressures have an intrinsic link on performance and retention, with a significant percentage of mature students being self-funded. I propose to review financial support from both the University and Student Finance England; ensuring proportionate consideration is given on the basis of individual needs, removing the current objective assessment. The role would also provide the opportunity to review the grading of submissions; ensuring group assessments are evaluated proportionately. I would also campaign for the University to review the accommodation offered to those students with dependents, offering assistance for family units.
Range
Introduction to University can be an overwhelming experience, as Mature Students’ Officer I would take the opportunity to review the University’s student induction process, ensuring social inclusion in both social and academic Freshers’ activities with events scheduled at convenient times, in addition to a critical evaluation of timetable planning, enabling the University to give due consideration to the demands of those with professional responsibilities and caring commitments.
Amount
With a significant percentage of students balancing childcare responsibilities, family commitments and a demanding academic workload, this can limit opportunities to participate in clubs and societies. Through the Mature students’ network, I would provide a forum offering opportunities to share experience, raise issues and engage in social activities held at a convenient time, which do not coincide with extra-curricular responsibilities.
