“A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is human.”

Vera Nazarian

I believe strongly in the message being portrayed here although the reality of its practice isn’t entirely true.  A woman may have the legal right to an education in this country, but does that mean she is being equally represented during her studies? My determination to eliminate any remaining prejudice that women face and to bring the equality our female students deserve is the driving force which has lead me to run for Women Students’ Officer.

I strongly believe that I can help bring our Students’ Union into a more equal, positive and safe future for all students and to sustain this for years to come.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND IMPROVE ENGAGEMENT WITHIN SPORTS AND SOCIETIES

As Secretary for our predominantly female cheerleading squad, I know how prevalent prejudice and unfounded assumptions on a female’s character is and how important it is that these are eradicated. My firm connections with the Students’ Union’s sports’ and societies’ means that I will be able to promote better engagement for women students to ensure their views and opinions are heard and acted upon. Where demand permits, I will endeavour to support new sports teams and societies (such as women’s rugby) across all campuses. In turn, this would improve the representation of women within the Students’ Union and strengthen our voices in unison.

PROMOTION OF FEMALE ACHIEVEMENTS

Although gender inequality is still an issue, I think we need to recognise and celebrate how much has been achieved so far. As a proud female student at this university I wish to celebrate the achievements of our women who are striving for their futures and working towards their careers. I promise to organise events celebrating the amazing achievements of women past and present, such as ladies nights, International Women’s Day and social events with the women’s sports teams and societies.

SAFETY AND WELLBEING

The level of security measures in place on each campus is insufficient and doesn’t promote a safe environment at night for students, in particular, on Avery Hill campus from Sparrows Farm to Halls of Residence. I will campaign and fight for better lighting, stewarding/buses between venues and, where necessary, security cameras to help every student to feel safe when walking across all campuses at any time of day. I also intend to work closely with all four Sabbatical Officers to help raise awareness and support on issues such as abuse and mental health.

LISTEN

Above all, I can promise that as a woman, I will always listen; no email will be left unread; no voice will be left unheard. I am here to represent you, as a woman, as an individual, and as a united assembly. Equality is our right not only as women, but as humans, and I will always fight to reach it.
