As a current sabbatical officer (VP Student Activities) I have been in the thick of everything the union has done for the past 9 months. I know it's processes, it's achievements, it's faults!
I ran last year because I cared about Activities. This feeling has evolved to a passion about providing Greenwich students with the voice they deserve!
Strong but Practical
There are many situations where the values of our students may be dis-regarded and put to the side, which is completely unacceptable! I will project your voice to the University, the local communities in Greenwich, Eltham and Medway, the NUS and all other avenues that are required until it is recognised. However I believe that shouting and kicking aren't always the best methods of projection. I will be sensible in the way I approach these situations, in order to guarantee results, not make the situation worse.
Utilise Student Potential
We as a Union have been underestimating the potential of our students! We struggle to advertise what we are doing and yet we have three very capable media societies that could be reaching thousands of students if properly resourced! We continue to struggle with communications yet we have a huge marketing society itching for practical experience. We are one of the most diverse universities in the country, encompassing a huge variety of cultures. Why are we not celebrating this? I will bring in procedures that pull all Union recourses together and bring the full efficiency of Greenwich students into fruition.
Greenwich, a Student Borough?
Although the percentage of students living in Greenwich compared to other demographics isn't particularly high, there are enough of us to positively impact our communities. We have over 1,500 students living in Greenwich and Avery Hill campus accommodation alone. The inclusion of Devonport house will bring the total close to 2,000. Plus the other 20,000 that use our campus' on a regular basis, the figure slowly becomes very noticeable in a community. We should be more demanding of our neighbours to provide for us, but in the same light, we should be offering the huge potential I've mentioned back to the community, to create a strong, integrated Royal London Borough.
Run by Greenwich students, for Greenwich Students!
In my opinion the last part of this phrase hasn't quite been adhered to in recent years. It is certainly getting better, but we should not still have 80% of our students' not knowing what the Students' Union is and what it can do for them. I believe that Greenwich students should be at the forefront of our decision making processes! I will make Union Council available to all students. I will commit to regular opportunities to question sabbaticals and bring forward ideas. I will provide the platform for a genuinely democratic, transparent Union.
I will be your voice!
