I believe that each student deserves to be on an equal platform in order to meet their academic potential and to do this the Students' Union has a responsibility to provide this for their students. I wish to run as your VP Education to ensure each student is able to excel at their studies.

Throughout my experience at the University of Greenwich I have worked with individuals from various backgrounds with different levels of seniority in the university, and have built strong relationships with staff in both the SU and University.

Improve engagement

The student body is unaware of the vast majority of education issues, due to a lack of platforms of discussion. I will put into place focus groups and drop-in sessions convenient to students in order to discuss their opinions and concerns. Academic societies deserve to have a stronger voice in the Students' Union, therefore I will work with them as another form of student engagement. Union media should be utilised more effectively to make engagement accessible to all.

More resources for students

Support off-campus learning by making core textbooks available in eBook format across all departments. Students work better in different environments, therefore it's important that they have access to the same resources as students that work better in the library. Tired of University computers being occupied with no student at the desk? I will ensure that computers are occupied by students who need it by installing software that tracks the use of computers and automatically logs out once the computer has been inactive for a period of time, ensuring it is kept available for students who genuinely need it. I will work with the different Schools to guarantee that exam timetables are put up well in advance to mentally prepare students. I will also look into coursework review options where students can submit their coursework early for feedback, then resubmit for final marking.

Promote awareness of support available

During hardship, students are not always aware of the resources available to them, be it financial, emotional or practical assistance. I will actively promote the resources available from the SU, the University and from external sources in order to improve student retention rates, and make students feel better supported during their degree.

Assistance for Students with Mental Health issues

During assessment periods, Mental Health sufferers are expected to perform the same as non-sufferers, which puts them at a disadvantage due to the fact that they have overwhelming concerns that affect their abilities. The only current provisions in place are extenuating circumstances, interrupting of studies and withdrawal - all of which do not adequately support students wishing to continue their studies. In order to improve this it will take the involvement of relevant part-time officers, external charities and the current disability office to work on better support for students, as well as educating the student body  and University staff on mental illness and its’ adverse effects on education.
